Christmas Weddings

Christmas is my favorite holiday so a Christmas wedding is an absolutely fantasy of mine. There are so many ways to have a Christmas wedding without the traditional colors and designs. Christmas goes beyond green and red colors. Think of all the other wonderful ways you celebrate the holidays. My first Christmas inspiration board is inpired by one my family Christmas Eve tradtions. My grandmother would make homemade hot cocoa and bread. We would sit around the livingroom, watching Christmas movies while we enjoyed her homemade treats. From A Former Bride to Future Brides

Over the weekend, I was doing my usual wedding industry research on the web. I stumbled across a new blog Adventures In Wedding Planning. This post caught my attention because I’ve had similar experiences with potential clients. I so desperately want to work with them and help them plan their wedding. Not because I just love wedding planning but because I can see this person seriously needs the help. Even when they don't choose me, I hope that hire another wedding planner.

In this posting, Melissa of MasterPiece Wedding potential client didn’t hire her because they wanted to save money and in the end she regretted. These were the brides words not the planner by the way. Before you make another plan for your wedding, I strongly suggest you read this article. It will give some insight from a former bride that went through exactly what you are going through right now.

Fall Wedding Purple Inspiration – Essie’s nail polish

One Sunday I was out doing my usual Sunday routine, gym, grocery store and then a pedicure. It was the first weekend in October so I in the fall mood. When the fall begins my colors of choice begin become darker and richer tones so it was time to leave my pinks behind. As I was in deep thought to make the right choice and found Essie’s Bahama Mama. Love it!! It’s in the eggplant family but one slight shade lighter. This deep purple is a great color for the fall in your wardrobe, nail polish and of course for a fall wedding. Two Words . . . . Jenny Yoo

This past weekend was full of events and I met some amazing people!! One of the biggest treats was meeting Jenny Yoo! I'm a huge fan of Jenny Yoo and when I met her at the Trendspot Couture Show I was like a kid in a candy store. Jenny like her designs was sweet, simple and fun to be around. Her designs are trully a reflection of her. The best thing about Jenny Yoo is her dresses can flatter any woman. The styles will flatter all shapes and sizes and you can also pick dresses with different necklines. This will give a uniform look but also give each bridesmaid their own look.

This dress will be the most popular bridesmaid dress of 2010! The picture doesn't do it justice. It's elegant, sexy and versitile. More importanly, this dress can be worn again. I want it just to have! It's perfect for weddings, cocktail parties or any occasion where a dress like this is needed.

Fall Wedding Inspiration - Yellow, Brown & Gold

Recently I was up early and the cool fall breeze hit me harder than my wardrobe allowed. So thinking on my feet, I found a street vendor that sold pashmina scarves for $5.00!! I’m sure it’s not the real thing but it did the job and the color complimented my outfit of the day. I love the mustard yellow scarf so much it gave me some wedding color inspiration. Yellow is a great color for the fall and a mix of espresso and gold will make for a elegant spin on the traditional fall wedding colors. This just goes to show you that you can find your wedding inspiration any where! Enjoy!!

Wedding Favors

One of the biggest dilemmas couples has when planning their wedding is what favor they should choose for their guest. These days, most couples do not go the traditional route and go with a favor that is unique to their personality. I always tell me my clients give something usable or edible. Figurine, wine stoppers or scented candles just don’t cut it these days. Being a foodie myself, I would prefer to an edible favor so when I saw these favors on The Knot I just had to share. This couple gave each of their guests a Krispy Crème Donut with a note that read “sweet dreams”. How cute is that?! Your guests are sure to enjoy a sweet treat on the way home!!

Wedding Day Love: Sarah & Stephen

Sarah & Stephen were the winners of the Couture Package giveaway. They tied the knot on August 29th at The Tides Esate in New Jersey. It was a rainy day but it was still a wonderful wedding.

Sarah was a determined to stay within her budget and she did a great job and made very good decisions. There were a lot of DIY projects that she took on and they all turned out great. Every aspect of the wedding tied into their travel theme and color scheme of magenta and aqua. They named all the tables after countries they have visited with a story of their travels and the cutest part was their table name was South Africa where they would be going on the honeymoon. They used pictures of landmarks and used photoshop to add their engagement photos to the picture. The guests were given aqua luggage tags and they followed a map designed by one of Sarah’s friends to their table.

My favorite part of the wedding was the entertainment. Sarah’s sister and her dance partner did a salsa dance that was like watching dancing with the stars!! It was so well done!! Sarah’s dance with her father started with a touching song by Kenny Rogers and half way through the DJ changed to an upbeat salsa song. The guests were so surprised not to have the traditional dance. The final performance was a tribute to Michael Jackson that Sarah and some of friends did. They happen to get married on MJ’s birthday so they put together a short dance routine to “Beat It’. It was great!! They even had sequence gloves to wear.

No wedding is complete without great vendors!!

Bridal Party Gifts

Every client I work with seems to stumble when it comes to finding the right gifts for their bridal party. Most couples want to try something different from the traditional bridal party gifts but they aren’t sure what would be a great gift. I always say practical and useful is the way to go. Also they don’t all have to have the same gift. They have different personalities so why not get them each a gift they would each appreciate. Here are some suggestions just to get you started.

The Music Lover
Everyone has an IPod these days so why not help then accessorize their IPod or an ITunes gift card.

The Coffee Drinker
If you have a friend that can’t live without their morning cup of Joe then they would appreciate a gift card from Starbucks or their favorite coffee place.

A Little Pampering
For the bridal party member that enjoys a mani and pedi then a they would appreciate a gift card to a luxurious spa.

The Movie Lover
If you have a friend that goes to the movies for every opening then a night out on you will be what they need after being a part of your wedding.

Keep in mind that these gifts will probably run you the same amount as the traditional wedding gift so don’t worry about the cost. Just remember how much they have done for you during your wedding planning process.

Wedding Shoes

Inspiration Brought To Life!!

I thought I was going to back in full blog swing but my schedule told me otherwise. None the less I didn’t want to leave my readers hanging so here is an update on what’s going on in the Couture Events by D world.

As I mentioned in my previous post, my mega wedding is approaching fast. Last weekend we had our design session. This is when the couple gets to see a mock up of the design for their wedding day. The décor for this wedding is Caribbean Elegance. The bride has a traditional style but I wanted to infuse some modern aspects as well as a Caribbean look. I thought this would be perfect for them because both are from the Caribbean and the bride wants to use the names of town from their home lands instead of table numbers.

Since there are so many tables we decided to have low and high centerpieces to help cut some of the cost. Here are some pictures, I hope everyone likes them as much as the bride did. There will be some slight changes but hey that’s why we have mock ups.

I'm Back!!

It’s been a crazy couple of weeks but I’m getting back on track. Just to feel my readers in on why I haven’t posted anything in a while, here is a rundown of what’s been going in the Couture Events by D world.

Last Sunday, my team and I handled the floral design for a wonderful summer wedding at Chateau Briand. The weather was perfect and the floral designs help add to the beautiful summer day. You may remember my recent post of the mock up centerpiece. I decided to add a deeper pink to add some dimension and a pop of color. We also added Casa Blanca lillies because the MOB loved lillies. Here are some pictures with professional pictures to follow.

On the calendar of upcoming g events is a wedding I’ve nicknamed the mega wedding! I’ve been working with a great couple for the last 8 months on their August wedding for 400+ guests. That’s right 400 guests!! All the plans are going well but the date is drawing near and I’ve been busy, busy, busy!! The bride and groom come from big families that love to party. The bride has a traditional style while the groom wants a wedding that will wow their guest. That’s a fact that we recently found out when he saw the simple yet elegant invitations the bride chose. This is when we all found out how much style he really has. Needless to say the invitations were redesigned and the results are just fabulous. Thanks to Le’Trice of LePenn Designs we have satisfied both bride and groom.

So this is what has been keeping me rather busy these days not to mention all of my other brides with upcoming nuptials, trying to go to the gym, have a life, family in town and oh yeah maybe, if I’m lucky, 8 hours of sleep!! Wedding Etiquette

Lately I’ve come across some etiquette questions that I thought I’d share with all my brides out there. Just in case you were considering some of these options, here is your answer.

Evites – I love evites for small parties and casual gatherings but for a wedding I’m going to have to say no to this one. I know it saves paper and money but your wedding day is a big deal and your guest deserve a proper invitation. I know there are some green brides that want to save paper but there is a better way to go green. Check out these eco-chic invitations made by Bella Figura. They are beyond eco friendly. They use wind power, all of their invitations are made from 100% cotton and they donate 1% of their sales to environmental causes.

Monetary Gift Request – I know you don’t want a gravy bowl or monogrammed towel but you cannot put monetary gifts on your invitations. The purpose of inviting your friend and family to your wedding is not the gifts, that’s an added bonus. They are there to share in your special day and we should all be grateful for that. Most people know the general rule of thumb and yes you may end up with some gifts but it won’t be the majority. Trust me, I’ve been to enough weddings to know the outcome. I pretty can ensure you all that you will receive more monetary gifts than gravy bowls.

No Children – many couples do not wish to have children at their wedding which is understandable. However please do not put the words “no children” on your invitation. It’s blunt and rude to those who have children. A better way to phrase it is “adult reception”. This gives the hint to those with children that their children are not invited without hurting their feelings.

Now I’m all for it’s your day do it your way but there are some etiquette rules that will always apply when it comes to weddings. Update On Sarah & Stephen

A month ago I met with the winners of the Holiday Proposal Contest, Sarah & Stephen and they were sooo much fun!! I was laughing the entire time during our consultation. I almost forgot I was working. They are a great couple and it's so obvious why they are together.

Sarah has been planning her wedding all on her own and she's done a great job with everything. She has infused their love of traveling with simple elegance. Now we are working on putting the final touches all together. Stay tuned for more details!

Recently Sarah and Stephen had their engagement session with their photographer Vanessa Joy and it came out just perfect. They took shots all over NYC and Brooklyn. Most importantly, Sarah said they had a great time. Sarah also said, she was happy they decided to have an engagement session because it gave them the opportunity to get comfortable in front of the camera and with their photographer. So for all you brides out there that are considering an engagement sessions, from one bride to another it was worth it.

Inspiration Brought To Life!!

Taking a bride’s vision and bringing it to life is my job as a wedding planner and designer. Currently I’m working with a bride and mother of the bride with two different visions for the wedding décor. The bride loves color with a contemporary style and her mother has a more traditional and classic style. To accommodate both bride and MOH we came up with a compromise. I combined the bride’s love of peonies and color and the MOH classic style and love of roses and created this beautiful and colorful centerpiece all while keeping with the bride’s color scheme of green and shades of pink. Tell me what you think!!

This center piece has green hydrangeas, pink peonies and pink roses. The final version will be sitting on a 20" high clear stand that will be filled with pink colored water to add more color for the bride. Each table will have pink and green votive candles with rose petals. I'm so excited and I can't wait for the wedding day to see it all come together. Is This Thing On?

For every couple I work with, about one month before their wedding we have a meeting to discuss all the wedding day details. This meeting is to ensure all t’s are crossed and all i’s are dotted. We go over every single detail with ease but the one subject that always causes a bump in the road are the speeches. I always add it to the to do list but when it comes time to make the final decision, I get dead air. What I’ve come to learn is the couple is usually nervous about this portion of their wedding. They don’t want embarrassing stories told about them. They don’t want the speeches to go on for too long. Or they don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings by not giving someone the opportunity to share some kind words. The speeches can be a tricky thing to figure out but don’t worry I have some solutions.

One way to decipher how to handle the speeches is to simple think about the kind of couple you are. Are you party people, are social people, are sentimental or do you shy away from the spot light. Also think about the people in your family and their personalities. You may have some family members that are shy or some who are waiting for the mic to come their way. These questions will guide your choice on how to handle the speeches. If you want to party as much as you can, then you will keep the speeches to the minimum. The bestman, maid of honor and the parents will do just fine. This will only take about 20 minutes. If you are on the sentimental side, you can have an open mic format but with a time limit. Let your DJ or MC know how long you want the speeches to go on (it shouldn’t be long then 30 minutes, you don’t want your other guest to get bored) and once the time is up the DJ can gracefully wrap it up and move on to the next portion of the wedding day festivities.

If you want a select few to give a speech, let the chosen ones know this before the wedding. This will give them time to prepare something. You don’t want anyone winging it at your wedding. This will be uncomfortable for you them and you.

If you want to avoid embarrassing stories coming out, have the speeches before the party gets started. Liquid courage may encourage some family members to say something they wouldn’t have said with a sober mind. You can’t avoid them all but this is sure to help.

I was invited to visit Island Restaurant & Lounge and it was an amazing night. The space is an oasis in the city. The white walls and natural wood décor sets the scene for an island paradise in the middle of NYC. The laid back lounge furniture makes you feel like you are on a beautiful island. There are two levels, perfect for cocktails, dinner and dancing. And the food, oh the food was delicious!! Their seafood is so fresh. This maybe the freshest calamari you can find in a NYC restaurant. Every dish that was served was just superb. The lollipop lamb chops served on a salad with vinaigrette dressing was mouth watering. I also sampled the pan seared scallops and the roasted chicken, both were delish!!

This venue is the perfect setting for a wedding of 125-175 guest with a casual elegance. You can have cocktails on the first floor then move your guest upstairs for dinner. If you are seeking a unique venue to host your wedding, engagement party or rehearsal dinner, I highly recommend Island Restaurant and Lounge!!

We all remember the famous groom’s cake from Steel Magnolias, the armadillo red velvet cake, the best groom’s cake ever!! Most brides wouldn’t choose the armadillo but if that’s what your groom is into why not?!

Do you know why there is a groom’s cake? Well after some research, I now know why so I thought I’d share it with you. The groom's cake is a smaller cake that is served at the wedding reception. Young unmarried women are supposed to take a piece of the groom's cake home to place under their pillows and the old wives tale says they will marry whomever they dream of that night. It’s like believing in Santa Clause but it is cute story to tell. I think it would be a unique idea to give all your single friends a piece of the cake with a note attached about the groom's cake tradtion. On the other hand, I wouldn't want to insult anyone so before you go with that idea, think about what it may come across to your friends. The groom’s cake is a southern tradition but it’s rather popular amongst us all. It’s also making a big come back. The groom’s cake should reflect the groom’s personality. When it comes to choosing the mother of the bride's and groom's attire for the wedding, this can be a touchy subject. You want them to wear one thing and they may want to wear something completely different. The best way to handle this is compromise. Let the mothers be themselves but guide their choice with a color palette or choice of style. It’s your day but they have to be comfortable with their attire as well. The best way to find the right dress is communication. If you have a certain color in mind, let them know upfront. Don’t wait until they go shopping to hit them with this news. Also ask the mothers what they had in mind and share your ideas as well. You are bound to come up with something you both like. Dress shopping can be a fun day of mother and daughter time or a good time to get to know your future mother in law a little better. Break free from the tradition and throw your friend an updated bridal shower she will never forget. When planning the bridetobe’s bridal shower, you should base the theme on her personality. Think of her favorite things from her past and present. Keep her personality in mind at all times and makes sure it shows throughout the shower. Is she a martini drinker? Doe she love shoes? What her favorite food? What’s her favorite movie? What does she love to do on a Saturday? These simple questions can help you with the direction of the shower theme. As the legendary Colin Cowie once said, “Love is in the details darlin”. Of course the traditional aspects of a shower can still be incorporated. The shower games and opening of the gifts are still the crowd’s favorite. Even if she's a traditional gal that wears pearls, you can still add a modern spin to it. By adding her personality, this gives the shower a more personal feeling and makes it unique from the traditional shower. Whatever you do just make sure it’s a shower the bride will always remember.

Ask The Planner - Cocktails or Mocktails?

Q: My fiancé and I are Christians and we do not drink alcohol at all. Most of our guests are Christians as well but some of our guests do drink socially. We do not wish to serve alcohol for our reception. All of our friends and family know we don’t drink so I think they will be fine with a non alcoholic reception. I want to serve non alcholic versions of popular drinks like daquiries and pina colodas but a couple of my friends are telling me to serve some alcohol. Also I don’t want my guest drinking and driving. Is this a good idea or will my guest be disappointed?

A: Well first congratulations on your engagement and I hope the planning process is going well. Your friends and family do respect your beliefs but you have to respect their choice as well. I’m sure when they visit your home; they do not expect to have a glass of wine. However this is not a small gathering of family and friends, this is the biggest party you will ever have. People do enjoy having cocktails at a wedding and they look forward to it. I think it’s best to serve wine and beer at the least. This will accommodate your guests that do drink. Your idea of coming up with non alcoholic cocktails is a great idea. Many frozen drinks can be done in a non alcoholic version, like pina colodas and daiquiris. Also, consider the time of day your wedding is taking place. If you’re having an evening wedding, there is an anticipation of alcoholic beverages. You may want to consider an early afternoon wedding. I think this will best suite the type of wedding you are having and people usually drink less early in the day. If you are still not convinced, think of it like this; if you were attending a wedding and the bride was a vegetarian, would you expect a vegetarian meal? Probably not right? It’s the same situation just a different element. I hope I was able to help you solve your planning dilemma.

Purple Passion Inspiration Board

I hardly ever think about what I would do if I was getting married. I would go crazy if I did because there are so many fabulous options for weddings. These cookie favors are a great favor and best of all they are personal. The couple included their family recipe for the cookies and of course the colors of the packaging matched their color palette of chartreuse and brown. This is a great DIY favor that is pretty simple to assemble. All you need is clear cellophane bags, customized labels and print the recipe on matching paper. Here is the love story of the winning couple!!

Love story: My fiancé and I met at an Asian speed dating event in July of 2007. In our 5 minute chat, we talked mostly about our international travels. We got "matched" after we both picked each other and exchanged emails to set up our first date. We went out on a first date at Otaisho, a Japanese restaurant on St. Marks Place. After our second date, I decided that I didn't like him because he was a germ-phobe and I thought he might be gay from his high intonational speech patterns (I'm a speech language pathologist). After the second date, he invited me out to a Korean movie festival via email and I responded back saying that I couldn't reciprocate his interest, but we could continue on as activity partners if he wanted. He wrote back an email saying that he thought that watching movies is an activity and he really wasn't interested in being more than friends. I didn't bother responding to his email because I thought his bitchy attitude didn't deserve a response. A few months passed and we met again at the same speed dating event in December 2007. We were assigned to the same group again, which was a coincidence since he lied down about his age the first time and I lied up about my age the second time round. We caught up with each other during our speed "date" and had a fun and pleasant conversation. We even talked about going ice skating (as friends). I invited him out to eat after speed dating with a group of my friends and we all had a good time. A little over a week later, both of us played hooky from work to try to use the last of our vacation days for the year. We went ice skating in Bryant Park with my other guy friend. We became friends and about 1 month later the friendship turned into romance on New Year's 2008 (my birthday). Together we have explored Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, New Jersey, Connecticut, Montreal, Maryland, Virginia, DC, Vermont, and Egypt. We look forward to a lifetime of roadtrips, foreign lands, and strong stomachs. We hope to incorporate some travel themes (tables by country, mypublisher.com guestbook of our travel pictures) into our wedding celebration since we both love to travel.

Proposal: My fiance Stephen suggested that we head up to Vermont for some skiing before the end of winter. He organized a trip to Vermont on Valentine's/President's Day weekend. He researched where to stay and booked a room at the Belding House bed and breakfast in Moretown. This was a little out of the ordinary since I had planned all of our previous trips together. We went to a lovely Valentine's dinner at Mary’s at Baldwin Creek. In our absence, the innkeepers Clif and Larry (who were in on the surprise) had decorated the room with silk rose petals and chilled a special bottle of Dom Perignon champagne that we had been saving for a special occasion. My fiance proposed to me with a wedding invitation that he had specially prepared (via Vistaprint) inviting me to our wedding celebration. Then we drank the champagne (couldn't even finish the bottle!) and got red in the face because we're Asian and lack that enzyme that processes alcohol (thus no drinking on our wedding day until the fat lady sings!)

Sunflower Power Inspiration Board

I must admit, sunflowers are not my first choice but ever since that conversation I've been thinking of sunflowers. I guess the challenge of stepping out my box inspired me to create this sunflower inspiration board.

You Don’t Need A Wedding Planner . . . . .

April Fools!! You should have known that was a joke being that I am a wedding planner!! I hear this all the time, “I can do it myself” or “My family can help me out” or “I can’t afford a wedding planner”. These are the biggest misconceptions brides have all the time. The truth is none of these statements are true and let me tell you why.

You cannot do it all yourself. If you have already started planning your wedding, you probably already realize how much goes into planning your wedding and how much time it takes. You may also realize how much you didn’t know about planning a wedding. The planning process is so much fun and if you are not having fun then you should rethink not having a planner. A professional wedding planner can advise you during the planning process. Your wedding planner will help you find the right vendors, help you chose a realistic budget, etiqutte advice and most importantly, put the fun back into planning your wedding. Another issue to think about is what is going to happen on your wedding day? You cannot be the bride and ensure everything is running according to plan. Do you really want to make phone calls to vendors while you do your makeup? I don’t think you do!! You and your fiancé should be relaxed and your only concern should be to focus on getting your ready for your wedding. So even if you want to plan your own wedding, you should consider investing in a planner for day of coordination services.

Your Aunt Susan throws great holiday parties but she is not a professional. We all have family members who are reliable and are great host/hostess but the truth is they are not wedding planners. They don’t know as much as you think they do. Planning a wedding takes much more than someone who casually host events for their friends and family. It takes a wedding professional to orchestrate the many details that go into planning a successful wedding. No offense to Aunt Susan but it takes a lot of know how to plan a wedding. When I first started out, it was because of my experience of planning parties for family and friends. However, I did a lot research and networking within the wedding industry before I started my company. I quickly realized there was a lot I needed to learn. Planning a wedding for 150 is not the same as planning a party for 50 of my closest friends and family. Also wouldn’t you like all of guest to feel like a guest? Let your family enjoy your wedding day because weddings are about your families too.

The cost of a wedding planner is feasible and worth every penny. Many couples still believe that hiring a wedding planner is a luxury, this is not true. Speaking from experience, I’ve worked with couples and their budgets ranged from 20k to 75k. In the end they all received the same quality of service. Of course there are wedding planners that you cannot afford but there are also many you can afford. Just like all your other vendors, shop around until you find the right one. I Heart Hydrangeas!!

One of my favorite flowers is the hydrangea. Even as a child, I loved to see them in my neighbor’s garden. They are so simple yet so elegant and they make a huge impact with just one stem. Hydrangeas are in bloom during spring and early summer. They come in white, shades of pink, blue, green and burgundy. A great way to use the hydrangea is your centerpieces. A simple arrangment of all hydrangeas or a mix with other flowers will be the perfect addition to your table scape. Also you don't need a lot to do a lot. Ceremony Decor

Although you will spend most of your wedding day at your reception, your ceremony is just as important. This is when you and your groom officially become husband and wife. It’s a special moment and the décor should reflect that magical moment. I must admit, I am not a fan of spending a lot of money on ceremony décor, especially when you are working with a tight budget but I am an advocate for making the space look great. When choosing your ceremony décor, there are some things you should consider. If you are getting married in a church, synagogue or any other house of worship, the setting may not need a lot of décor. You can keep it simple with flowers with ribbon or tulle for the pews/seats.

If your ceremony is taking place in a non-traditional setting, like a park or beach, let nature be your back drop and add an arch or chuppah as you focal point.

Every time I have a client that booked Day of Coordination services, I always wish they would have either called me sooner or they chose another package that provides more one on one time. Some clients have made decisions that aren’t the best choice for them. I always check in from time to time to make sure things are running smoothly but it doesn’t seem like enough. Things usually work out but there is always some cleaning up that needs to be done. These minor hiccups can be avoided with more communication. Kimberly's & Justin's Wedding - February 28, 2009

My wonderful clients Kimberly & Justin, tied the knot this past Saturday. It was a great day!! Here is a little about the couple and some photos. Professional pictures will come later.

About the couple:
Kimberly contacted me back in July and I immediately loved her! She was so sweet and such a lady!! Along with her fiancé Justin (now husband) and parents, they had a lot of wedding planning done but needed some help to finish the rest. Her parents were having a lot of fun planning their little girls wedding and they openly admitted to me they weren’t too happy to have me step in and take over the plans but I assured them I will be involved as much or as little as they pleased. In the end, I won them over and I absolutely loved working with her parents!! They were so much fun!!

The Mood:
Kimberly & Justin wanted a traditional wedding with some modern elements. They wanted all the traditional aspect of wedding but they also wanted to their young and family oriented personalities to be present as well. Their bridal party consisted of 15 of their closest friends and their guests were all family members and friends that have touched their lives. It was also very important for them to have their ceremony in a church. They chosed a NYC landmark, Terrace on the Park for their reception. The ornate gold details and the view of the NYC skyline were perfect. To add a modern twist, they chosed white branches with hanging candles as their center pieces.

The Planning:

The unique aspect of this wedding was Kimberly and Justin lived in Tennessee while they attended law school. Most of the planning took place via email or phone call and they made occasional visit to NY. Even with the distance between us, all the plans went off without a hitch. Although they had a busy schedule they were very hands on with their wedding plans. They took on many DIY projects that were great additions to their wedding. They designed their own favors, prepared welcome baskets for their out of town guest and the programs which all came out fabulous. I also helped them to coordinate accommodations for their out of town guest. We arranged transportation to get them around for the day.

The Wedding Day:
On their wedding day, my main responsibility was to ensure the bridal party of 15 was on time. There were 9 bridesmaids and they were all so wonderful. Everyone was cooperative and they looked beautiful in their champagne and brown strapless gowns. The groomsmen look very handsome in their black tuxedos with black ties. The day started off great until my car battery died!! However, this did not hinder the wedding day plans. The bridal party arrived at the ceremony on time and the bride was a few minutes late but hey, the party doesn’t start without her. The ceremony was dressed with all with white flowers and tulle for the pews. The bride was all smiles as her father walked her down the aisle in her diamond white dress. The reception started with the cocktail hour of delicious appetizers and cocktails. When it was time for the reception to begin, the curtains were pulled back and revealed the elegant dining room. Keeping with traditions, the couple decided to assign seating for their guest. Each guest received a miniature bottle of champagne personalized with their names. The speeches were short but heartfelt and Kimberly’s sorority sisters of AKA serenaded her in the middle of the dance floor.

My Favorite Moments:
My favorite moments of the wedding are always the personal and sentimental elements. Kimberly’s serenade from her fellow sisters was so sweet and a surprised to her. What made this even more meaningful was the groom’s mother and aunt were also AKA members and joined in the serenade. There was also a special serenade for the couple from one of their guest. She sang at the bride’s parents’ wedding over 20 years ago. How sweet is that?! What really touched me was the gratitude I received from the couple and their family. They even bought me flowers to show their appreciation. I was so suprised and so grateful!! I don't even know when they had time to do stop and get it. I was so touched, when I put the flowers in water, I started to cry. Nothing makes me happier then happy clients.

Kimberly, Justin, Mr. & Mrs. Whyte and Mrs. Truesdale, from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for letting me be a part of such a beautiful wedding. Your gratitude and generosity means so much to me. I thoroughly enjoyed working with you and both of families were so sweet and treated me like I was a part of the family. I wish you a lifetime of happiness together!!

I’m always searching for new and talented vendors to work with so when I found Dante Williams of Dante Williams Photography I was elated!! His work is fabulous!! My favorites are the pictures that are not planned, just him capturing a moment. It adds so much to a wedding album when you can capture the emotions of the day and he does it so well. It seems like he was a guest at your wedding, not just the photographer. Another great aspect to his work; he captures the details. Couples spend months choosing special additions to their wedding and they may miss it come wedding day. Having the opportunity to see it again when it’s all over is just wonderful. Here are some thoughts from the man himself!

What inspired you to become a wedding photographer? I started my career shooting decors, floral arrangements, and wedding-set ups for some college friends that are in the industry. On my first assignment, I borrowed a friends’ point-and-shoot camera and went about taking pictures for the fun of it all. Some of these first images taken later appeared in a magazine, and from there I was hooked. My ego took over, and I set constant goals to be bigger and better. I wanted to shoot the most fun couples, at some of the best venues, in the best locations, and get published in the best magazines. I’ve since modified my goals as I’ve matured. Now it’s all about the couple…if there’s a chemistry between them and myself, we’re guaranteed to make some awesome images and have fun. Creativity is fed by positive vibes, and I’m happy to say that all of my clients give these.

What can couples expect when if they choose you for their wedding? Brutal honesty. Otherwise, I really don’t think couples should expect anything. It’s usually the unexpected that they will end up receiving anyway. When choosing a photographer, couples are basically trusting that photographer with capturing everything that they deem special on their wedding day. I aim to inspire trust in couples. When they trust me, they become free to enjoy the moment, and this is what makes my photography special. It’s those unrehearsed, un-posed, completely candid moments that no one expected would happen that end up becoming their favorite images from the day.

When you are working with a couple, how do you ensure their wedding pictures are unique? The number one thing that I insist on the couple doing on their wedding day is simple…to have fun. Don’t worry about the pictures at all. A capable photographer will capture your moments accurately, and for me that’s the most important thing during a wedding. Couples that hire me generally like the way I capture their moments…but I give them the credit for making the images special. I only take credit for being prepared to capture it. My style is very pure and simple, so it’s not the technique I used to capture an image but the content that makes it special.

What is your favorite part of a wedding? The preparation…I love the mood swings that happen during the moments leading to the ceremony. Whether it be nervousness and anxiety, or pure happiness and frivolity, the feelings are usually intense, and they can change at the drop of a dime. This time of day is often intimate, and it affords opportunity for people to open up. Some of my favorite images are taken during this time.

Accomodating Children at Your Wedding

I came across this picture of me and I had to blog about it!! I was about 4 or 5 years old and this was my first wedding. I was the flower girl as you can see and I was the worse flower girl in the history of weddings!! I cried all the way down the aisle, I didn’t want to take any pictures and any pictures I did take, I had that face on. It was a running family joke for years and if anyone from my family sees the picture they will happily repeat the joke for you!! It’s ironic to me that this was my reaction to a wedding and now I’m a wedding planner!! Go figure! I would like to mention that the couple is still happily married.

Seeing this picture made me think of all the children that are either in weddings or invited to weddings. Let’s face it, weddings are generally for adults but if you having children attend your wedding then you should accommodate them as well. Providing a children’s tables filled with activities will keep them entertained and also give their parents a chance to cut a rug. You can provide a goody bag of coloring books, crayons, toys and of course something sweet! If you are having a lot of children, you may even consider hiring a “sitter” of some sort. Someone to monitor the children, play games with them or maybe keep them entertain in another room. I only make this suggestion if you are having enough children to full a table. If there will be one or two children, then a goody bag will do the trick. Whatever you decide, just don’t forget about the little ones!! They are your guest too!!

I always try my best not to exclude the groom when I’m working with my clients but I’ve neglected to do so on with my blog. Shame on me!! It’s his big day too so let’s make sure he looks his best.

Wedding attire is a major part of the wedding. Your attire of choice should go with the tone of the wedding. I have noticed that this is a detailed that is easily overlooked. For the groom and the groomsmen, here are some helpful tips on choosing the right attire.

Informal: Business suit, white shirt and a tie

Semi-Formal Daytime: Formal suit, white shirt, vest, tie or bow tie

Formal Daytime: Cutaway or stroller jacket, waistcoat, stripped trousers, white wing collared shirt, striped tie, studs and cufflinks

Formal Evening: Black dinner jacket, matching trousers, waistcoat, white tuxedo shirt, cufflinks, vest, cummerbund or vest

Very Formal Day Time: Cutaway coat, wing-collard shirt, ascot. Striped trousers or vest

Very Formal Evening: Black tailcoat, matching striped trousers, white wing collared shirt, waistcoat, patent leather shoes, studs and cufflinks, gloves

Rich Bride, Poor Bride

I’ve been feeling under the weather these last couple of days so I’ve been spending a lot of time in bed with my laptop. This down time gave me an opportunity to catch up on some of my favorite wedding shows I love to watch and one episode in particular stuck out.

Are you familiar with the show “Rich Bride Poor Bride” that comes on WeTV? Well the premise off the show is to show how couples plan their wedding on different budgets, usually small to average. On this episode, the couple Kevin and Lindsay were on a tight budget of $15,000. Lindsay was by far the cheapest bride I’ve ever seen but she had her reasons. However, her cheap ways almost cost her great memories of her wedding. If you are a budget bride, this is the episode for you!! It will help you put some things in prospective. Even the bride realized she made some mistakes and should have paid for certain services. In this economy, we are all trying to save but before you do, seek professional advice on where to skimp and where to spend. You do not want to look back and regret your wedding or be unhappy on your wedding day.

Married Away!!

Destination Weddings are becoming extremely popular. Many couples choose this route because for one let’s face it, it’s a vacation and who doesn’t love that. Two, many feel it’s easier than the traditional wedding. A destination wedding is a wonderful way to tie the knot but there is still planning involved. Here are some planning tips to help all my married away brides get started.

1) Send save the dates to your guest at least a year in advance. This gives your guest time to plan and save for the trip. Include your destination, the date (of course) and if possible the hotel accommodations.

2) Create a wedding website to update your guest on accommodation information, passport/visa requirements and the schedule of events that maybe taking place. Be sure to include your website on your save the dates. You can easily create a website on many wedding sites for free. http://www.theknot.com/, http://www.mywedding.com/, http://www.ourweddingday.com/

3) Do your research before making your final decision. Get recommendations and read reviews from other couples that have gotten married at the resort or venue. Also take a tour before booking. Don’t rely on the web for all your research.

4) Hire a wedding planner/coordinator in the destination you have chosen. They are familiar with the local vendors and can do the research on your behalf. Hiring a planner from your home town is also helpful and you get the one on one attention you may need. A good planner can plan a wedding any where!

5) Negotiate a group rate with for your airfare and hotel when booking for 10 or more guest.

But Honey Its Cold Outside!!

It’s the coldest day of the year but I’m couldn’t be happier today because tomorrow I’ll be on a flight to the sunny island of Trinidad & Tobago!! But before I go, I had to share a story of a wedding I planned back in January of 2005. This called weather jogged my memory.

My clients hired me only 2 months before their wedding after the bride realized that planning a wedding for more than 200 people was a little bit too much for her to handle. So I stepped in and handle all the open items. She needed a photographer, videographer, favors, centerpieces, and bouquets. The biggest dilemma was the RSVPs. She had inadvertently sent the invitations with no response card so I had the lovely task of calling all of the guest for their replies. But we got it all done and the plans were looking good. On the day of the wedding, everything was running smoothly. I made all of the bouquets, vendors were confirmed, deliveries were in route and the bride was calm. Then I opened my front door to leave and what did I find, 6 inches of snow and there was no end in sight. By the time the wedding was suppose to start, NY was blanketed with a foot more. This clearly presented a bump in the road but I remained calm and proceeded with the day. In the end, the wedding was perfect! Despite the delay because of the snow storm, everything went very well. All of the guest had a great time, the bride and groom were happy and I now have a funny story to tell!!

Ask The Planner

Q: My wedding day is May 2011, when is the right time to start planning my wedding?

A: On average, couples start planning their wedding 18 months in advance. There is a plus side to early planning. You will have a lot more time to save for your wedding and you may be able to get 2009 rates for your 2011 wedding. The down side is wedding trends change every year. You may fall in love with something this year and by next year you will change your mind. To avoid that problem, I would suggest that you don't make any final decisions on decor, themes, colors or more importantly your dress before you reach the one year mark. Save your ideas and if you still love them one year before your wedding, then go for it!! As for vendors and venues, feel free to shop around and see what's out there. Chances are if you like a particular venue/vendor, you will still like them a year later. Just be sure to know their payment and refund policy if you decide to change your mind.

Location, Location, Location!!

Choosing a location for your reception is a big part of your wedding plans. 50% of your budget will go into your reception. Most of your wedding day will be spent in this location. Your choice should reflect the overall style of your wedding and it should work with your budget. These factors should be taken into consideration when choosing a location. Here are some tips to guide you in your choice.

Banquet Halls and Hotels:

The Swan Club, Roslyn Harbor New York

Pros: Banquet halls and hotels are a classic choice for weddings. They provide everything you need under one roof. Food, alcohol, linens, china and silverware!! It’s very convenient and you won’t have to worry about a thing.
Cons: There isn’t a lot of wiggle room for personalization. If the carpet is pink then you are stuck with pink carpet. Most venues do not allow changes to fixed objects. But not all is lost here; you can still make it your own by changing the linens and adding some lighting.
Who is this venue for: The couple that wants a traditional style wedding. Perfect for

couples with a large guest count because these venues can usually accommodate large parties.

Loft Spaces:

Studio 450, New York, NY

Pros: A loft space is a great venue for a wedding. You have an empty space to design any way you wish. Loft spaces are my favorite spaces to work with. You have total freedom to be creative.
Cons: The downside to loft spaces is you have to bring in everything. You must hire an off premise caterer and bartender. You also have rent linens, tables, chairs and silverware. Logistically, this can be a lot to do on the day of your wedding but with the right team of people it will go off without a hitch. You can also get a preferred vendors list to help you find everything you need.
Who is this venue for: The couple with a modern style and wants to make their wedding reflect their personal style.

Unconventional Venues:

Central Park Zoo, New York, NY(photo credits: New York Weddings.com)

Pros: If you want something different for your wedding, consider museums, vineyards, the zoo, a tent or even an aquarium. These sites add a unique element everyone wants for their wedding day.
Cons: Like loft spaces, you have to provide everything to accommodate your guest and this may include a portable kitchen and bathrooms.
Who is this venue for: The couple with an imagination and always dears to be different.

How Much Does That Cost?

Setting a budget is very important when planning a wedding. No matter the size of your budget, you should know how much you are willing to spend before you start spending. Many couples spend more than they would have liked and I believe it’s because they never really set a budget to begin with. Not only do you need to know how much you are willing to spend but you also need to know how to spend it. There are many elements that go into planning a wedding and they all come with a price tag. To help you allocate your funds, here is a chart that I use to help my clients allocate their budget.

Reception 50%
Photography 12%

Flowers/Decor 10%

Apparel 8%
Transportation 5%

Rings 4%

Music 3%

Stationary/Printing 2%

Gifts & Favors 2%

Ceremony 2%

Misc/Accessories 2%

Another helpful way to allocate yourbudget is to prioritize the things that are important to you. List all the categories in order of importance to you. The items at the top of your list are where you can splurge and the items at the bottom are where you can be more flexible with your selection.

Remember no matter the size of your budget; keep the number in mind when you are searching for venues and vendors. You should know how much to allocate to each category before you agree to anything. If you go over in one category, you should be willing to make up the difference in other areas to help keep you within your budget. If you saved in one category, you can take that extra money and splurge on something else!!

Setting A Date

As I mentioned yesterday, I’m dedicating some time to all the newly engaged couples. So this week is all about tips and advice for them!!

For 2008 the most popular date to get married was 08.08.08. This year 09.09.09 will not be as popular because it’s a Wednesday but I’m sure some couples will choose this date. A Wednesday wedding is very uncommon but there are some of benefits to this 09.09.09 date. A week day wedding cost much less than a weekend wedding. Most venues, if not all have a lower fee during the week. If you are planning a wedding on a budget, this may be the date for you. I know of you are thinking, A Wednesday Wedding, no way!! But I think this can be a wedding all of your friends and family will remember. Your wedding is already unique, it’s on a Wednesday!!

Here are some other dates to consider:

Holiday Weekends:
Pro: You can have a Sunday wedding with a Saturday night feeling. Most people don’t have to work the next day so you can have that evening wedding you always wanted.
Con: Some people plan vacations during those weekends so you risk the chance of losing some guests. Also if you have out of town guest, traveling during the holiday is usually cost more.

Friday or Sunday Weddings:
Pro: The fee for your venue of choice is usually lower than a Saturday. These days will help save a couple of dollars per head.
Con: For Friday, people are you usually coming straight from work and you may run the chance of people running late and you may not want to inconvenience your guest. For Sunday, people have to work the next day if it’s not a holiday weekend. Bottom line it’s not Saturday and some people just like the Saturday night wedding.

Saturday Weddings:
Pro: Saturday night is the most popular day to get married. Your guest are available to attend and it’s the most convenient day of the week.
Con: It’s the most expensive day to get married. The average Saturday night wedding cost $150.00 per person, you can have the same menu on a Friday or Sunday for an average cost of $100.00 per person. That's a big savings!!

Congratulations!! You Said Yes, So Now What?

Congrats to all my newly engaged couples out there!! I’m sure many of you are still on a high and your mind is racing with ideas for your big day. I’m sure you have a lot questions and concerns too but don’t panic! Take a deep breath and keep reading . . . . . .

For newly engaged couples, they usually have a hard time getting started with their wedding plans. They are not sure what to do first, where to begin or when to begin. To help all my newly engage couples, here are the items you should focus on now:

Nine Months and Earlier

1) Choose the type of wedding you want: This will set the tone of your wedding. All of your decision will be based off of this choice. Do you want a traditional, contemporary or theme wedding? It’s important to know what you want before you start your purchasing items and booking vendors. You want to make sure all the elements of your wedding have a cohesive look and feeling.
2) Choose a wedding date: This is an easy one and it goes without saying but choosing a date can be a little more calculated than you think. It may be a date of sentimental value, the date that fits your busy life style or if you’re budget conscience it will be the date that gives you the best bang for your buck.
3) Determine a budget: Very important!! Your budget has an effect on all of your wedding plans. No matter how big or small your budget is, it’s important to know how much you would like to spend. You don’t want to start booking anything without knowing your budget because you may choose one element that will take you over budget before you get a chance to book any of the others.
4) Consolidate a guest list: Before you book a venue, you need to know if the space can accommodate the number of guest you are having or that you will have enough guests to meet the spaces minimum. Also your guest count will go hand and hand with your budget. The more guests you are having, the more money you probably spend on your wedding.
5) Reserve your ceremony and reception site: Once the first four decisions are made, you can move on to site selections. It’s important to book as early as you can because many places go fast. Remember there are only 52 weekends a year!!

The silver sphere will add a great holiday touch to a Christmas theme wedding because of they resemble ornaments but without looking too much like Christmas. They also work well for winter weddings. The silver adds an icy winter feeling to a winter wonderland wedding.

I just read a very helpful blog on the difference between a wedding coordintor and a wedding planner on www.weddingbeepro.com and I thought I would share with all the brides out there who are looking for a wedding planner or a wedding coordinator. This blog helps distinguish the difference between the two and helps you get a better idea on deciding what you need for your wedding day.

I consider myself to be a wedding planner and designer. My services provide guidance and support through out the wedding planning process. I advise my clients on every aspect of their wedding. From choosing the right location to the perfect shade of purple!! I am a designer for two reason; 1) I have a backround in floral design and I've created all my past clients floral designs for their wedding and 2) Designing a wedding is not just about flowers, it's about taking a vision in bringing it to life by including all of the elements of a wedding. Red Inspiration Board

The color red is a great color palette for a winter wedding. It works well with an array of accent colors. If you are getting married during the winter months, adding silver and black will make for an elegant winter wedding. For a Valentine’s Day inspired wedding, red is a beautiful display of the color of love. Flowers come in many shades of red. Using these different shades will add depth and texture to a simple floral arrangement. You’ll be surprised how elegant a cluster of red carnations can look!!

6,000 Wedding!!

On the same day I received a question from a bride on a budget, I also read an article on www.essence.com about a couple who spent $6,000 on a wedding!! UNBIEVALABLE!! Judging from the pictures, the wedding turned out to be pretty nice. For all my brides out there, please keep in mind this woman lives in Atlanta so this may not be possible depending on where you live. What she accomplished was remarkable and kudos to that bride but please keep in mind it takes a lot of hard work, a lot of time and research to accomplish what she did.

Ask The Planner

Q: Hi Deniesha, My finance and I come from huge families, do you think it's possible to have an elegant wedding with 200 guests on a budget of 15k. Please let me know if you think I'm daydreaming.

A: I tell all my clients anything is possible depending on the choices you make. Like most brides, I'm sure you want a wedding that you and your guest will remember forever. My honest opinion is you will more than likely have to increase your budget by at least another 10k. But I do have some tips on how to save.

1) Choose an off day for your wedding date. The most expensive day to get married is a Saturday night. Fridays and Sundays are usually cheaper at most venues. Even consider a weekday if possible. An early Sunday afternoon wedding is the cheapest and most convenient option.

2) Keep your menu and bar selection simple. Instead of serving 3 choices for your main course (chicken, beef or fish) just serve chicken. Most people eat chicken and if you have some guest with special dietary needs, like vegetarians, you can ask your caterer or venue to have those meals prepared as well. There is usually no extra cost for this. If you are getting married in a venue where you can bring in your own caterer, have a buffet instead of a sitdown dinner.

3) Be a DIY!! If you are a crafty person, take on some of the wedding day projects yourself, like invitations, programs or favors. There are many DIY kits out there that are fabulous.

4) Look out for sales! When shopping for items like your wedding day attire, look out for sample sales and trunk shows. You can get a beautiful dress at a great price.

5) Shop around and be creative. When you are searching for vendors, like photographers, videographers, or DJ's look around for vendors that may be starting out in the wedding industry. They are willing to offer their services at a discount or sometimes free in exchange for exposure, a recommendation and the opportunity to increase their portfolio. Be sure to make an appointment to view their portfolio and if possible read some reviews from former clients.

6) Track your spending. Keeping track of your spending will help you stay on top of your budget at all times. So when making your selections you will always know how much money you can spend on that particular item. I strongly recommend this because as time goes on you book vendors, you buy things and before you know it, you are way over budget.

Many brides on a budget think they cannot afford a wedding planner but that is not that case. Hiring a planner will save you time and money. A good wedding planner will help you find vendors that suit your budget and give you guidance along the way. I've worked with array of budgets so I know exactly what you are going through.
